Wind On Coal

Like a piece of coal that has just come out of a fire, our soul, which has been set on fire by the love of our God, must constantly be fuelled by the wind (Holy Spirit) if it is to grow in intensity and not be extinguished.  Like the wind which fuels the heat on that piece of coal, the Holy Spirit fuels the present love in our hearts.  If this wind is not there, the brightness of the burning coal will soon fade away into nothing.  This is the final process of spiritual purification which St John of Cross talks about in The Living Flame of Love.
