Natural Disasters and Humanity

Natural disasters are a reminder that there is something greater than humanity.  Natural disasters force an otherwise unfelt humility within us.  A need to stop what it is we are doing, take a step back from the pride of our own achievements and advancements, and be reminded of our place within the world, and not above it.  It is sad that such great tragedies must exist before we are forced to look at our shared humanity and the ever present vulnerability behind our perceived strength and place in the world.  The greatest acts of charity and solidarity come from such tragedies, and it is perhaps the only time we can justify the billions and trillions we spend on our armed forces.
