In the three theological virtues of faith, hope and love we can find the answer to any possible human question. Here we can find healing and rest for any of the ailments which enslave the human heart.
In faith we can find the light that is needed to make our darkness clear. It is amongst darkness that light makes itself known, by revealing itself in contrast to all that is around it. Through its presence, the extent of the darkness in our lives becomes clear. Without light we have no way of knowing we live in darkness, because there is nothing else to measure it by.
Through hope we are given a goal and a purpose. These are amongst the biggest bars which imprison the human heart, and create mammoth worries in our lives. Our world demands that we worry about the future and secure it the best way we can (with money). Worrying is an inherited consequence of our world. All our worrying can be traced back to that famous fall from Eden, when the first humans began to worry about what they were wearing (Gen 3:7). It is an inherited sin that captivates our heart. Hope gives us the means for emancipation. Through hope we are able to live our lives without the worries of the future, because it secures the future through itself. Hope is part of the substance of our faith, one cannot have one without the other. All faith must be in something both present and absent, something both now and in the future, and in something both seen and unseen. Hope is certainty about an uncertain future. Hope makes living amongst the reality of such an uncertain future, through the certainty that there is One beyond time and place. Hope, therefore, transcends time.
TRUE love is unity. It brings all things into harmony. There is nothing else a human heart can want but love, and all other longings are forever unquenchable. Through love we are given the very thing that allows us to feel complete. We long to be loved and to experience the absolute tranquillity and transcendence it provides. When we are in the loving arms of our mothers, or our children, we feel complete, and all our worries fly away amongst the wind and the trees. Nothing teaches a person more about love than a little child. Our children are gateways to the mystery of true love. We do not choose them, they choose us. True love is one, and does not discriminate the way our own ideas of love do. True love cannot be broken or destroyed – it conquers all things. Our marriages – and indeed our love – are not built on this foundation. This is the love that our children teach us and the love that forever transforms our lives and our relationships. This is the love I am referring to in this context. A love that brings meaning to our lives, and to the pain and suffering we all must experience. A love that transcends the confines of our world and the enslavements of our hearts.
Through prayer and meditation, therefore, we are given the answers to all our concerns. By meditating and contemplating the events of our lives in light of faith, hope and love, we can find the answer to all our worries, and free the enslavement of our hearts.
